He ended up with three working routes: a bank account with a foreign currency side, Payoneer for marketplace clients, and a NayaPay wallet for quick withdrawals. Each one suits a different kind of payer. The right choice depends on whether the money is a client payment or a family remittance, how much it is and how fast you need it. Getting the channel right also matters for tax, because Pakistan’s lowest rates apply only to money that arrives through official banking channels.
To receive money from abroad in Pakistan, give the sender your bank IBAN and SWIFT code, or use Payoneer for client and marketplace payments. Families abroad can send through Wise, Remitly, Western Union or Xoom to your bank, JazzCash, Easypaisa or a cash pickup point. PayPal and Stripe don’t open accounts for Pakistani residents.

Receive Money Directly Into a Pakistani Bank Account
Any Pakistani bank account can receive money from abroad by SWIFT transfer. Give the sender your account title, 24-character IBAN, your bank’s SWIFT code and the branch address. Payments usually take 3 to 5 business days. Freelancers should open a Freelancer Digital Account with a linked foreign currency account, so part of their earnings can stay in dollars.
Details to Give Your Client or Family
- Account title, exactly as it appears on your CNIC and bank records.
- IBAN, which starts with PK and runs to 24 characters.
- Your bank’s SWIFT code, such as HABBPKKA for HBL.
- Bank name and branch address.
- A payment purpose, such as “IT services” or “family support”, so your bank codes it correctly.
Our guides explain what an IBAN is and what a SWIFT code is, including why a $1,000 wire can arrive short after intermediary bank fees.
Freelancer Digital Accounts and ESFCAs
The State Bank of Pakistan’s framework lets freelancers open a Freelancer Digital Account with minimal paperwork, digitally or at a branch. An Exporters’ Special Foreign Currency Account (ESFCA) opens alongside it. You can keep 50% of your export earnings or $5,000 a month in the ESFCA, whichever is higher. Use it for software subscriptions, ads and foreign vendors.
Since April 2026, IT exporters and freelancers don’t need to declare detailed purpose forms for export proceeds up to $25,000, according to Profit by Pakistan Today. ESFCA money can’t be moved to other foreign currency accounts, so spend it from the ESFCA itself.
Receive Client Payments Through Payoneer
Payoneer is the most common way Pakistani freelancers get paid by Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon and direct clients. It gives you US dollar, euro and pound receiving accounts. You then withdraw to a Pakistani bank, often instantly through HBL or Meezan apps. Payoneer charges up to 2% to convert foreign currency to rupees.
| Payoneer cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Payment from another Payoneer user | Free |
| Client pays by bank transfer through a payment request | About 1% |
| Client pays by card through a payment request | About 3% |
| Withdrawal to a PKR bank account | Up to 2% |
| Annual account fee | $29.95 if you receive under $6,000 in 12 months |
| HBL in-app withdrawals | Up to 30 a day, $5,000 a day maximum |

Why Not Wise or PayPal?
Wise doesn’t open accounts for Pakistani residents, though people abroad can use Wise to send rupees to you. PayPal doesn’t offer accounts to people living in Pakistan either, and there’s no confirmed launch date. Our Wise vs Payoneer comparison explains which works in each country.
Receive Family Remittances From the US, UK and UAE
Family members abroad can send money to Pakistan through Wise, Remitly, Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria or Xoom, or through their own bank. You receive it in your bank account, a JazzCash or Easypaisa wallet, or as cash at a pickup point. Eligible home remittances through formal channels are free for both sender and receiver at Pakistani banks.
| How you receive | Services that deliver it | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Bank account | Wise, Remitly, Xoom, Western Union, sender’s own bank | Your IBAN and account title |
| JazzCash or Easypaisa | Xoom, Remitly, Western Union and others | Your registered mobile number and CNIC name |
| Cash pickup | Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria, Xoom | Original CNIC and the tracking number |
What Changed in July 2026
The State Bank ended two remittance incentive schemes on 1 July 2026: the Sohni Dharti reward points and the scheme that refunded banks’ transfer charges. Points earned up to 30 June 2026 can be redeemed until 30 June 2027. The SBP says eligible remittances must stay free for senders and receivers, and the Pakistan Remittance Initiative continues.
Receive Money Into NayaPay, SadaPay and Mobile Wallets
Digital banks and wallets are the fastest way to get rupees into your pocket. NayaPay gives you a 24-digit IBAN you can add to Payoneer as a withdrawal account. SadaPay’s SadaBiz lets freelancers send clients a payment link. JazzCash and Easypaisa receive family remittances through partner transfer services, usually within minutes.
How to Withdraw Payoneer to NayaPay
- Find your 24-digit IBAN in the NayaPay app under Add Money.
- In Payoneer, choose Withdraw, then add a personal bank account in Pakistan in PKR.
- Enter NayaPay as the bank, your name exactly as on your CNIC and your IBAN.
- Wait 1 to 2 business days for Payoneer to verify the new account.
- Withdraw the amount you need, review the rate and confirm.
These steps follow NayaPay’s own Payoneer guide. Wallet and digital bank accounts have transaction limits, so very large payments are better sent to a full bank account.
Receive Card Payments With Stripe From Pakistan
Stripe isn’t available to Pakistani businesses directly. Founders who sell online often form a company in a supported country, such as a US LLC. They open Stripe there and pay out to a US business bank account. They then move the money to Pakistan by bank transfer or through Payoneer. It works, but it adds company and compliance costs.
Our guides cover Stripe withdrawal to a Pakistani bank step by step. If you also get euro clients, read about getting a SEPA account so European clients can pay you by local transfer.
Tax and Paperwork on Money From Abroad
Family remittances through banking channels aren’t taxed as income for the receiver. Freelance and IT export income is. PSEB-registered freelancers and IT exporters pay a 0.25% final tax on proceeds received through banks, a rate the 2026-27 budget extended to June 2029. Keep your bank’s Proceeds Realization Certificate for every client payment.
Paperwork Checklist for Freelancers
- Register with the FBR, get an NTN and file returns to stay on the Active Taxpayer List.
- Register with PSEB as a freelancer to qualify for the 0.25% rate.
- Ask your bank for a Proceeds Realization Certificate (PRC) for foreign payments.
- Keep invoices, contracts and Payoneer statements for at least six years.
- Ask a tax adviser how the rules apply to your income, because rates depend on registration and filer status.
For a fuller record-keeping list, see our remote developer tax and banking checklist. This article explains the rules in general terms and isn’t tax advice.
How to Choose the Right Method
Choose by who is paying you. Use Payoneer for Upwork, Fiverr and Amazon. Use a bank account with an ESFCA for direct clients who pay large invoices. Use transfer apps or wallets for family money. Use Stripe only if you sell online by card and are ready to run a foreign company.
| Your situation | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer on Upwork or Fiverr | Payoneer to HBL, Meezan or NayaPay | Built-in payout method, instant PKR withdrawals |
| Direct client paying $5,000 or more | SWIFT to your bank with an ESFCA | Clean paper trail, PRC for tax, dollars retained |
| Small direct client payments | Payoneer payment request | Client pays by card or bank in their own currency |
| Family in the US, UK or UAE sending support | Transfer app to your bank or wallet | Free to receive, fast, sender sees costs upfront |
| No bank account | Cash pickup with your CNIC | Same-day cash at thousands of agents |
| Online store or SaaS | Stripe through a foreign company | Card payments at checkout |
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions Pakistani freelancers and families ask most.
What is the best way to receive money from abroad in Pakistan?
For freelancers, Payoneer is usually best for marketplace income, and a bank account with an ESFCA is best for large direct payments. For families, a transfer app paying into your bank or wallet is cheapest, because eligible home remittances are free to receive. Cash pickup suits people without a bank account.
How can I receive dollars in Pakistan?
Open a foreign currency account or, as a freelancer, an ESFCA alongside a Freelancer Digital Account. Give the payer your IBAN and SWIFT code, and the dollars arrive by wire. Freelancers can keep 50% of export earnings or $5,000 a month in dollars, whichever is higher. The rest converts to rupees.
Is PayPal available in Pakistan?
No. PayPal doesn’t offer accounts to people living in Pakistan, and there’s no confirmed launch date. Family members abroad can still use Xoom, PayPal’s transfer service, to send money to a Pakistani bank, JazzCash, Easypaisa or a cash pickup point. Freelancers usually use Payoneer instead for client payments.
Can I use Wise in Pakistan?
Not to open an account. Wise says Pakistani residents can’t sign up. People abroad can use Wise to send rupees to your Pakistani bank account, usually within 1 to 2 business days. The sender sees the fees upfront. That makes Wise useful for family transfers but not for receiving client invoices yourself.
How long does an international transfer to Pakistan take?
A SWIFT transfer to a Pakistani bank usually takes 3 to 5 business days. Transfer apps such as Wise often deliver within 1 to 2 business days, and some deliver to wallets in minutes. Cash pickup is often same day. Payoneer withdrawals through HBL’s app can arrive instantly once your account is linked.
Is money received from abroad taxable in Pakistan?
Family remittances through banking channels aren’t taxed as the receiver’s income. Freelance and IT export income is. PSEB-registered freelancers pay a 0.25% final tax on proceeds received through banks, extended to June 2029. Others may pay a higher rate, so keep your PRCs and check your position with a tax adviser.
What is a PRC and do I need one?
A Proceeds Realization Certificate is a document your bank issues to show that foreign income arrived through official channels. Freelancers need it to support the reduced tax rate on export earnings. Ask your bank for a PRC for each client payment, or monthly, and keep copies with your invoices for your tax return.
Can I receive money from abroad in JazzCash or Easypaisa?
Yes, for family remittances. Services such as Xoom, Remitly and Western Union can deliver directly to JazzCash and Easypaisa wallets, often within minutes. The sender needs your registered mobile number and your name as on your CNIC. Wallet limits apply, so larger amounts are better sent to a bank account.
How much can a freelancer keep in dollars?
Under SBP rules, freelancers and IT exporters can keep 50% of their export proceeds or $5,000 a month in an ESFCA, whichever is higher. You can spend it on software, ads and foreign vendors without SBP or bank approval. ESFCA money can’t be transferred to other foreign currency accounts.
Which Pakistani bank is best for Payoneer?
HBL and Meezan Bank both let you withdraw Payoneer balances inside their mobile apps, often instantly. HBL allows up to 30 withdrawals and $5,000 a day. You can also withdraw to any Pakistani bank or NayaPay through the Payoneer dashboard, which usually takes 1 to 2 business days.
Set Up Two Channels Before You Need Them
Hamza’s Chicago client paid by wire to his new ESFCA, and the $900 landed four business days later with a $25 intermediary deduction he hadn’t expected. His next clients came through Upwork, so those payments go to Payoneer and on to his NayaPay wallet the same day. His mother’s monthly support from his brother in Dubai arrives in her Easypaisa wallet within minutes. He now gets a PRC every month.
That’s the practical answer for anyone working out how to receive money from abroad in Pakistan. Set up at least two channels before a client asks: a bank account with an ESFCA for direct payments and Payoneer for platforms and smaller invoices. Register with PSEB and the FBR early, so the low tax rate applies from your first payment. Keep every PRC and invoice in one folder, so tax season takes an afternoon instead of a week. Which channel will your next client use, and is it ready today?
