Etsy Payment Methods: Every Way to Pay on Etsy (2026)

A client of ours, Marisol, sells hand-glazed ceramics from a studio in Portland, Oregon, and we look after her Etsy listings and ads. Every holiday season her inbox fills with the same questions. "Do you take Afterpay?" "Can I pay with Venmo?" "Will my gift card work?" She can't answer them shop by shop, because Etsy controls the checkout and every shop gets the same Etsy payment methods.

That’s useful to know as a buyer. If a payment option is on Etsy’s list for your country, it works in almost every shop. If it isn’t, no seller can switch it on for you. The list is longer than most people expect, but a few popular apps are missing, and some options only show up when your settings match your country.

Etsy payment methods include credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Etsy gift cards, prepaid Visa and Mastercard cards and, in the US and UK, bank payments. Klarna lets buyers in seven countries pay in installments. Etsy doesn’t take Afterpay, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App or cryptocurrency directly, and you can only split a payment with an Etsy gift card.

What Payment Methods Does Etsy Accept?

Etsy accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Etsy gift cards and credits, and prepaid cards from Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Depending on your country, you may also see bank payments, Klarna installments, Klarna Pay in 30 days or iDEAL. Every option runs through Etsy’s own checkout, so the list is the same in nearly every shop.

Some sellers accept only some of these methods, usually because of where the shop is based. Check the payment options near the Add to basket button on any listing before you commit. Two methods get the most questions, so we’ve covered them in full: does Etsy take PayPal and can you use Visa gift cards on Etsy.

Etsy Payment Methods by Country

Your country decides which extra Etsy payment methods you see. Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Etsy gift cards work almost everywhere. US and UK buyers can also pay from a bank account. Klarna installments cover seven countries, and Klarna Pay in 30 days and iDEAL are mostly European options.

Paying From Pakistan, India or the UAE

Buyers in Pakistan can’t use PayPal, because PayPal doesn’t open accounts for residents there. A Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card with international online payments turned on is the simplest way to pay. Check with your bank that the card allows foreign currency purchases, and expect your bank to add its own conversion fee.

What Is Etsy Pay and How Does It Work?

When people search for Etsy Pay, they usually mean Etsy Payments, the checkout system behind every Etsy payment. You pay Etsy, not the seller, whichever method you choose. Etsy then passes the money to the seller’s Payment account. That’s why every shop shows the same options and why Etsy can step in when an order goes wrong.

Two things happen behind the scenes. Etsy may run a small pre-authorization on a new card to check it’s valid, and it drops off your statement once the card is confirmed. Etsy also screens orders for fraud. If you get an email saying your order is still processing, Etsy says most screenings finish within three days.

Saved Cards and Card Security

Etsy saves the card you use so the next checkout is faster. To edit or remove it, open Your account, then Account settings, then Credit Cards. Buyers in the EEA, which covers the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, may be asked to confirm a payment with their bank before the order goes through.

Pay Later on Etsy: Klarna, Not Afterpay

Etsy’s buy now, pay later partner is Klarna. US buyers can split an order of $45 to $10,000 into four payments every two weeks, or take Klarna financing over 6 to 36 months on larger orders. Etsy doesn’t offer Afterpay, Affirm or Sezzle at checkout. On the four-payment plan, Klarna charges no fees or interest when you pay on time, though late fees can apply.

Can You Use Afterpay on Etsy?

No. Afterpay isn’t one of Etsy’s payment methods in any country, and sellers can’t add it. If you want to spread the cost of an Etsy order, Klarna is the option Etsy supports. If you already use PayPal’s own installments, see how PayPal Pay Later works. Etsy doesn’t list it, so don’t count on it appearing at checkout.

Why Klarna Doesn’t Show at Checkout

Klarna only appears when your billing address is in an eligible country, your location, language and currency settings match that country, and the order sits inside the range. You also need an Etsy account. If Klarna declines you, the option turns grey. Some shops don’t accept Klarna either, so a mixed basket can hide it.

Payment Methods Etsy Doesn’t Take

Etsy doesn’t take Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, Afterpay, Affirm, cryptocurrency, checks or money orders at checkout. None of them appear on Etsy’s payment methods list, and sellers can’t add them. A few have workarounds through a linked card, but sending money to a seller outside Etsy removes every protection you’d otherwise get.

Venmo users can move money into PayPal first and then pay with PayPal on Etsy. Our guide on how to transfer Venmo to PayPal covers the steps. If you’re choosing between apps for everyday payments, compare PayPal or Cash App first.

Never Pay an Etsy Seller Outside Etsy

A seller who asks you to pay by Venmo, Zelle or PayPal Friends and Family is asking you to give up Etsy’s Purchase Protection. Etsy can’t help with an order it never processed. Pay through Etsy checkout every time, and report any shop that pushes you to pay somewhere else.

Which Etsy Payment Method Is Best?

For most buyers, a credit card is the best Etsy payment method. You get Etsy’s Purchase Protection plus your card issuer’s chargeback rights, and cards work in every shop. PayPal suits buyers who don’t want to share card details. Klarna suits large orders, and Etsy gift cards are the only way to split a payment.

Why an Etsy Payment Fails at Checkout

An Etsy payment usually fails because of wrong billing details or a bank block on a first or large purchase. A prepaid card without enough balance, or a problem on PayPal’s side, are the other common causes. If you see “There was a problem with your order,” Etsy says to check your billing and shipping details, then contact support from the bottom of the page.

  • Out-of-date saved card: edit it under Account settings, then Credit Cards.
  • Bank block: banks often flag first-time and high-value orders, so call your bank to approve it.
  • Daily limit: a multi-shop basket is one transaction, so move items to Saved for later.
  • Prepaid card: register it with the issuer and make sure it covers the full total.
  • PayPal error: contact PayPal support, or pay another way.

A charge can appear on your statement while an order is still processing. Etsy only finalizes it once the purchase goes through, and failed orders drop off, usually within a few business days. Etsy’s page on trouble checking out lists the current fixes.

What Sellers Should Know About Etsy Payment Methods

Sellers don’t choose payment methods one by one. Joining Etsy Payments switches on every method available in the buyer’s country, and each sale costs the same processing fee whatever the buyer used. In the US that’s 3% plus $0.25 per order, on top of Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee. Payouts go to your bank, or to Payoneer in some countries. If a payout stalls, see what to check when your Etsy payment account is not working.

A Klarna, PayPal or Apple Pay order pays out exactly like a card order. If you also sell on your own website, the maths changes with each processor, so it’s worth seeing how to choose payment methods for Shopify stores and how Stripe and PayPal fees compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the payment questions Etsy buyers ask most.

What payment methods does Etsy accept?

Etsy accepts credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Etsy gift cards and credits, and prepaid Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover cards. US and UK buyers can also pay from a bank account. Klarna installments are available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Italy and Spain, and iDEAL works in the Netherlands. Shops abroad may show fewer options.

Does Etsy take Afterpay?

No. Etsy doesn’t offer Afterpay in any country, and sellers can’t turn it on. Etsy’s buy now, pay later partner is Klarna. US buyers can split orders of $45 to $10,000 into four payments every two weeks, or use Klarna financing on larger orders. Your billing address, region, language and currency settings must all match the US for Klarna to appear.

Can I pay on Etsy with my bank account?

Yes, in the US and UK. US buyers pay through Link, a Stripe service that saves your bank details for faster checkouts. UK buyers choose their bank and approve the payment in the bank’s own screen, and that approval only covers the one order. Buyers in the Netherlands can use iDEAL bank transfers. Other countries need a card, PayPal or a wallet.

Can I use two payment methods on one Etsy order?

Only if one of them is an Etsy gift card or Etsy credit. Etsy applies that balance first and lets you pay the rest with any other method. You can’t split one order between two cards, a card and PayPal, or a prepaid card and a bank account. If a basket costs more than one card covers, split it into separate orders.

Does Etsy accept Venmo or Cash App?

Not directly. Neither app is on Etsy’s list of payment methods. You can enter a Venmo or Cash App debit card in Etsy’s card field like any debit card, as long as it has enough balance. Venmo users can also move money to PayPal and pay with PayPal. Never send money to a seller through either app outside Etsy.

What is the safest way to pay on Etsy?

A credit card through Etsy checkout. Etsy’s Purchase Protection covers eligible orders that arrive damaged, late, not as described or not at all, and your card issuer adds chargeback rights. PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay keep your card number hidden from the seller. The only unsafe choice is paying a seller outside Etsy, because none of that protection applies.

Why can’t I see some payment methods on Etsy?

Etsy shows payment methods based on your region, language and currency settings, plus the seller’s location. Set your real country at the bottom of any Etsy page, then reload your basket. Klarna also needs an eligible billing address and an order inside its range. Shops in Türkiye and some newer shops in Europe can’t offer PayPal, so those options stay hidden.

Can I pay on Etsy without an account?

Yes, for most methods. You can check out as a guest with a card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay. You need an Etsy account to use Klarna, redeem an Etsy gift card or credit, or pay with iDEAL. An account also makes it easier to track orders and open a case if something goes wrong, so it’s worth creating one.

Etsy Payment Methods: The Short Version

Marisol now pins one message in her shop announcement: every Etsy payment method works here, Klarna for orders over $45, no Afterpay or Venmo. Her holiday inbox got noticeably quieter, and she spends that time glazing instead. Her bigger lesson was that buyers trust Etsy’s checkout more when they know exactly what it takes.

Etsy payment methods come down to a simple rule. Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Etsy gift cards work almost everywhere. Bank payments, Klarna and iDEAL depend on your country and settings. Venmo, Cash App, Afterpay and Zelle don’t work directly, and only Etsy gift cards can be split. Which method gives you the protection your next order needs?
